This Erases Everything
May 11, 2007
We have a friend who exclaims, upon seeing/hearing/tasting something new and spectacular, ‘This erases EVERYTHING!’ All life experiences that preceded this wine/chocolate/concerto/toe-grafting technique have been obliterated; they exist no more.
So how about this?
It may not erase everything, but it can wipe it up.
This, my dear, is a moebius handtowel. (Perhaps the world’s first moebius towel, but my natural humility precludes such a grandiose claim.) Last month, after the Magical Moebius Festival, as I waited for my delayed flight from Portland to Chicago, and then for my further delayed flight from Chicago to New York, my heart overflowed with the love of moebius, and my bag overflowed with dishcloth cotton (don’t leave home without it). So I knitted on this thing. Somehow I hoped for something more….I don’t know, exciting? But I like it. It’s kind of a cockeyed roller towel.
How to make it (memo to the person in my imagination who wants to make this): Cast on as many stitches as your circ can handle, moebiusly. (Dolphin, hummingbird, crocodile! Dolphin, hummingbird, crocodile!) Knit in garter stitch (which means purling alternate rounds), changing colors as your yarn runs out or when you get antsy. Watch with simple-minded amusement how the moebius magically turns the garter-stitch stripes from RS to WS without you doing a thing. Really fun, marginally useful project. Also doubles as a shoulder cozy for a small child (note: child must be thoroughly chilled to agree to wear this item).
Happy weekend all!
