License to Miter

Hey guess what? A yarn store/cafe in beautiful Brooklyn kindly asked me to teach a workshop on the Mitered Crosses Blanket pattern.
I have not been to La Casita yet, but I love it already because (a) it is a “yarn shop and wine bar” and (b) it is the only yarn store in the world that didn’t get the memo that a yarn store name has to include the word yarn, knitting, wool, loop, purl, stitch or ewe. Radical!
Space is limited but since this was organized at the last minute, last-minute signups are welcome. It’s next Tuesday evening, May 17, from 7 to 9. For details and to reserve a spot, call the shop at (718) 963-0369.
La Casita didn’t ask me to do this, but I prepared a little resume to prove my qualifications to teach miters and log cabin, separately or in combination, knitted or otherwise. You name it, I have mitered it.
Rowan Denim, a mix of recycled (blue) and brand-new (ecru). Full disclosure: Belinda made two of these. I love a houseguest who pitches in on the knitting! (There’s a fifth one in the seat back pocket in front of seat 22A on a Delta plane that I rode to Omaha a few weeks ago. I keep hoping to find it mixed in with my t-shirts or something. But I think I left it on the plane. Oh well, more of my favorite hobby!)
I may not have mentioned that I made a couple of crosses in Sophie’s Toes sock yarn, to mix into my Sophie’s Toes blanket-in-progress, which is getting weirder, I mean more eclectic, by the minute. I’m putting a lot of faith in the neutral palette to counter the eccentricities of the composition. This is a long-term project. (You know what that means.) I’m waiting for the vision. The vision will come. Definitely. Meanwhile, I’ll stockpile Sophie’s Toes and squares knitted in Sophie’s Toes.
Inevitably, I had to spend some time with the original quilt pattern (“Modern Crosses” in Modern Log Cabin Quilting, by Susan Beal.)
The fabric is from my very first jelly roll, a gift from Polly. I’d been waiting for the vision as to what a person might do with a jelly roll, and see: along came a vision! I’m treating the jelly roll, in which no 2 strips are the same fabric, but the colors sort of morph along throughout a single collection of prints, as if it were a skein of Noro yarn. I just use up each strip, and then pick up the next strip. This means that in some of my 12 blocks, the cross is in a single fabric, and in some there are 2 prints. You can imagine how much fun this was for me. (Well, Cara, who likes to make up rules like this for her knitted blankets can imagine it. (Cara, it was awesome! And I still have 3/4 of the jelly roll left!)
So you can see, I’ve been busy. (I’ve also been busy sending money to Mercy Corps, thanks to generous knitters who have purchased the pattern in support of Japan relief. As of this week, we’ve sent $13,500, and Mercy Corps is getting more and more curious about how knitting turns into money. Thank you knitters! And non-knitters who now own a knitting pattern!)

In other news, I’ve signed myself up, at long last, for one of Gale Zucker’s photography-for-fiber-lovers workshops. It’s on July 9, in the mythical land where the only sounds are the roar of the sea, the sighs of red geraniums and the gin-cushioned tinkling of ice cubes: yes, Southampton, New York, where white pants were invented.
