Queen of the Baby Shower, 2009 Edition

wackybaby.jpg
Dear Ann,
Look at the two of us. We are, technically, what both my Grandma Pearl and my Grandma Mabel called “shiftless”. We got no shift, at least not when it comes to summertime blogging. Thank goodness for kind publishers who want us to give away books.
Such as this fine, crazy, silly, fun book, “Wacky Baby Knits.” You gotta wonder how we got to the point, in the evolution of our ancient craft, that a knitter who wants to knit an infant-sized Elvis wig does not have to sit down with the graph paper and worry her pore haid about it. The dark days of amateur-designed baby wigs are gone! The instructions are all here, for Elvis wigs — and more! Tutus! Worrisomely realistic cow costumes! Biker jackets avec wings on back! If you knit these things, put them on a human child, and take photographs, you will have hell to pay one day, when the kid grows up, but think of the fun NOW!
I have a brand-new copy to give away. You need not be a wacky baby, or have a wacky baby, to apply. Just leave a comment to this post by noon, New York Time, on Friday, July 10. A winner will be chosen using a random picker thingie.
Love,
Kay

  1. Wow! What a wonderful book. I want it for my cousin who has started knitting and will have her second child in October.
    Thanks!

  2. That’s right folks, put it on them NOW before they can complain about it!!

  3. MeMeMe! I have a 4 month old that I am dying to costume with outrageous knitted items. My dear friend also has a toddler who LOVES to imitate Elvis. He needs that wig! His rendition of “That’s Alright Mama” will significantly improve with such a fantastic accessory.
Thanks for the giveaway and for such a great blog~

  4. I have a new great niece or nephew coming soon…I’ve embarassed her/his father enough for one lifetime and its now time to move on to the next generation. That biker jacket sounds like the perfect gift…

  5. I can’t resist anything with Wacky in the title. The cow hat is too crazy… my friend’s kid has outgrown his dead-chicken viking hat, so this will have to do now. I love the subtitle… what toddler is not fashion conscious, after all?

  6. Does the book have anything with skulls? Because my nephew is crazy for skulls.

  7. When I see a book like this, I always long for the adult version.

  8. Oh yay! My nephew, who is 8 months old, should definitely have a cow suit. He’s already chubby and adorable. I’ll make him wacky outfits and send you pictures!

  9. Looks like a hilarious book! I’m interested!

  10. Wacky and free! What could be better?

  11. Wacky and free! What could be better?

  12. Oh my gosh, that is a very creative book. My good friend would loove if I knit her little girl some adorable costumes. So would my fiancées nephews, I have the worst luck ever with this kind of drawing, but figure it’s worth a shot.

  13. This will make up for all those sleepless nights my 9 mnth old insists on.

  14. That baby looks uncertain about his or her cow hat. But the biker jacket sounds awesome!

  15. Sign me up! I love wacky babies.

  16. This book looks fabulous! I have a wacky brother and sister in law whose youngsters need Elvis wigs. Really! Catharine

  17. Ooooooh, that’s just what I need to maintain my status as the perennial Wacky Auntie!

  18. Oh my goodness! I forsee many a wacky baby in the future! (Hopefully our baby, but I’m not picky)

  19. I love the cover of this book, and can only imagine what delights lie inside. The horns on the hat alone have already got me thinking that this is the year to knit a Viking hat (with long blond braids, of course)for my own Halloween costume….

  20. Me, me, me, me, me!

  21. Pick me – pick me – pick me!!! Our niece and nephews are planning to have young’uns soon and I sooooo want to knit wacky things for them ‘cuz it’s my job (thanks to John Candy in “Uncle Buck” for pointing out the embarrassment responsibilities) and since my last name starts with “wack” (yes, I had to love him a lot to take the name), it would be a good fit!!! It seems so fun. BTW, you’re not shiftless — you flattified a log cabin for a friend.

  22. I luv wacky.

  23. I luv wacky.

  24. I luv wacky.

  25. There are babies popping up around me! Save me from baby blanket doom!

  29. Oh. I need to make an Elvis wig :) Pick me!

  30. My brother promised to hold me down so my kids could beat me for the ridiculous Halloween costumes I made for them as babies. Now I can KNIT them instead of sew them!

  31. yes please!

  32. Well, duh? Who wouldn’t want this to torture future nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and grandchildren?? Sign me up!

  33. I SO need this book. You never know when you’ll get a request for a wacky shower gift…

  34. How cute – and wacky to boot! Sounds a lot of fun patterns!

  35. What a cool looking book!

  36. who doesn’t want to knit an elvis wig?

  37. I Nee-ee-eed this book.

  38. Oh this is just too funny! It would be fun to just win the book to give it to someone with children…

  39. I Nee-ee-eed this book.

  40. Oh – this book is just too funny!! It would be fun to win just to give it away to someone who has little children (like my sister-in-law – my brother would kill me!).

  41. My babies were never wacky, but I have high hopes for wacky grandbabies.

  42. Cool!

  43. Ahem. I cannot look away :)

  44. Wow! My baby granddaughter would look cow chic in the cover outfit. Her carseat cover is cow print, too, so she’d just blend right in! Cow-moo-flage.

  45. It says something about knitters – something I love – that you will have many, many of us who covet this book.

  46. I think it’s illegal in some states to put a baby in an Elvis wig!

  47. lol, i have a preggars girlfriend that this would be perfect for knitting for the new one!

  48. Oh, how funny… I’d love to see that one!

  49. I have a 4 year old looking over my shoulder and begging for the cow hat! So far his brother hasn’t noticed, but it’s only a matter of time. We also have 7 new babies in the family in the past year, and as God is my witness, they’ll not go without Elvis hats while I still have the strength to knit!

  50. I.Must.Have.It.

  51. Yes, i’d love to win this to knit ridiculous things for my grandchildren to torture them. Hah! Even if i don’t win it, i think i may purchase it just to be able to torture them. Life is good…

  52. omygosh! This is hilarious. Love you gals!

  53. Oh my! When my son was a baby (and before I learned to knit), I bought a cow costume for him that looked an awful lot like the one on the cover. I now have an uncontrollable urge to knit a matching one for the next baby…

  54. How cute. As someone who hopes (soon, within the next year or two?!?!?) to have some great nephews or nieces, I would love to have this book. Thanks for the give away.

  55. That looks like so much fun!

  59. Absolutely! I have several friends that are either pregnant or still working on it and they all have a great sense of humor. Thanks!

  60. I think I need this book. My kids would love to gift their half-sister with some outrageous knit outfits. And. . . I would get a kick out of too (for entirely different reasons of course).

  61. Oh, my. I must have that. I never win anything, but I think I must have that book. There’s always someone having a baby when you work at an elementary school.

  62. The cow is just too cute!

  63. I saw a child on the bus whose mother had dressed him in a Dalmatian onesie–on purpose–and it’s not even Halloween. Surely a knitted cow outfit would be more suitable.

  64. I’ve been a big time “lurker” here for years. I moved to Sweden in 2007 and taught myself to knit using your book and the internet. I’m moving to Africa next, have your latest book but would love to take some baby knittin stuff with me! I think I’m ready for something a little more challenging than garter stitch and log cabin….bring it on!!

  77. Why would you not want your baby to look like a cute little cow?

  78. Wouldn’t I be the coolest uncle ever?!?

  79. OKAY–so I looked up this book on Amazon and you know where they suggest books to buy together? They matched up Wacky Baby Knits with Dan Brown’s newest thriller!
    That cracked me up.

  80. Oh, I SO need to knit things from this book for my friend whose baby is due in early September! I almost feel the need to knit the little guy a three-piece suit–the name they’ve chosen for him is Atticus. Yes, as in Finch.

  81. wacky is fun!!! thanks!!! Hope I win this

  82. Oh, what fun! Thanks for this.
Here in Minnesota, home of the Vikings football team, the cow hat done in purple and gold would be a prized item. Or, one could attach braids and have one of those coveted Brunhilde hats.

  83. baby knitting is so fun! Blackmail pictures for later is just a bonus!

  84. I will have to use a little math to convert the baby Elvis wig to an adult size so I can have an outfit for Halloween!

  85. Oh – pick me! I have a friend whose baby does the best lip curl ever. Elvis wig very much needed for this little guy :)

  223. My children are now old enough to bar me from humiliating them in the manner depicted by the knitted cow baby. However, I’m dying to knit something “avec wings” and the knitted Elvis wig sounds intriguing! I’m sure I can find someone willing to mortify their offspring. So, pick me!

  224. I am intrigued by what I might find inside this book!

  225. Hey I’m a grandma to knits AND I am presently making the excellent “Jane Austin” inspired dress from “Knitting Outside the Lines” for my granddaughters 2nd birthday. Thats got to count for something!!

  234. I used to know a toddler who loved to play Elvis, as in “you be Ann Margaret and I’ll be Elvis–lets DANCE!” Of course, I was always happy to oblige. If only I’d thought of a wig back then!

  478. Why do we always want to put babies in kooky, silly costumes? Because we can, bwah, hah, hah! Looks like a great book.

  479. Looks fun, count me in on the drawing.

  480. Having never won anything, anywhere, I believe my luck just might change with a random picker thingie and a book of wacky baby costumes!

  481. oh please oh please oh please pick me random generator!

  482. Want it! Want it! No excuse except that I too have done my time with Wacky Babies. If I don’t win it, I might have to buy it.

  483. I MUST HAVE THIS BOOK!

  484. I want to knit funny baby hats too!

  485. I have plenty of wacky to go around- either the babies themselves, their parents, or me!

  486. Hmmmmmm – is the cow suit really any worse than the Debbie Bliss bear suits? Babies look adorable in anything you put on them & believe me – even if you allow them to dress themselves (& exhibit their own taste) at a young age, they will cringe at their clothing in another 20 or so years. My older daughter is very strong willed & I learned very early on to limit our battles to the really major issues (like piercings). So she started selecting her own clothes & dressing herself when she was about 2 & a half. At about age 3 she developed this intense love of the colors orange & purple (worn together). I even made a purple & orange birthday cake for her 4th birthday party at her preschool. We have a picture of her from a family trip to the North Woods of Wisconsin when she was about 12 (or maybe 13). Every time she sees herself wearing those short red running shorts with the snug pastel striped LaCoste alligator top & tube socks pulled up to almost her knees, she cringes (of course at the time she thought she was the height of pre-teen fashion). I suppose that explains why she wore only black throughout her teens & much of her 20′s (she does war color now – but mostly muted).

  487. This book is made of WIN! I want it so badly I almost can’t stand it.

  488. I would love the book!

  490. Pick me!! I have lots of friends with babies that need “designer” knitwear!

  491. I’d love to have this book. pick me!

  492. I do believe that I would be able to put that book to some use and possibly redeem myself from the ‘shiftless’ category up to just plain old ‘no-count’. (No account, for any Yankees, not no-count as in, no counting. It’s confusing. Don’t ask.)

  493. I can’t wait to see a baby in an Elvis wig!

  494. I absolutely love it!!! The things we put our kids through and oh the joy! haha – love the cover-

  505. There may be a Christmas gift buried in those pages…count me in.

  506. It might feel better if I am picked on randomly, rather than for any specific reason. It alleviates the self-blame/self-improvement/ice cream cycle. I can go straight to ice cream this way, or in this case straight to wacky baby knitting. Teh extra weird today–i haz it.

  507. What a great book- the pictures alone are worth many laughs for exparents mother and grandmother

  508. What a great book- the pictures alone are worth many laughs for exparents mother and grandmother

  513. If I won the book, I would drop all knitting projects to simply start on the winged jacket! And of course, everyone needs a cow suit, right?

  514. I’d love to be entered, please! Once this damned MSEd is finished, I hope to actually knit again for all the adorable babies in my life! :)

  515. I know this is the lucky entry. Once I win, I will have to get a lottery ticket.

  537. Please let me be random. Love to read your adventuires, and have enjoyed reading your book. Rather than just read the patterns, I’ve started reading the stories, too!

  543. Ooo! I just love baby knits! :D

  544. I would seriously disagree with the “shiftless” part. Everyone needs a break once in a while. You could always say you’re test knitting. =)

  546. I’m in! Love the cow outfit!

  555. What a super book! Puts the fun back in knitting doesn’t it?

  556. Wow… maybe it IS possible to come up with another idea for a knitting book. That’s awesome.

  557. Speaking of a mom of 7- some of whom are already grown up- there is nothing better than having a truly embarrassing baby photo to show to the grown up kid’s friends and future spouse (my darling Michelle- let me dig out the photo of you at 18mths asleep and drooling in your high chair with a frilly dress on and a Henry the VIII calibre turkey leg propping up your head to show to your new boyfriend!!). Yes please!!! Enter me so I can help pass the joy on to young friends still in the kid producing years.

  558. Wow…I need to knit several of these. Now.

  559. Oh my goodness, that may be the cutest thing I have ever seen!

  560. This is too good to pass up!

  571. I photograph babies for a living. I wonder if I could convince any clients to let me dress their children like cows…

  572. I will never be Queen Of The Baby Shower because that title belongs to my daughter, Isla. She makes a fabulous baby pram centrepiece made entirely of fresh fruit and she can whip up dozens of perfect little cupcakes faster than I can make a cup of coffee.
Isla has no babies and cannot knit. Therefore if I win your book I could be Queen Mum Of The Baby Shower!

  573. OMG, I have no kidlets aside from a 13 y/o stepson but I bet I could upsize that cow costume to fit him. OK, so I’d have to bribe him like mad to get him to wear it but it would be completely worth it!

  574. I would love the book. My grandniece and my friends babies would all be sporting wacky baby knits. Looks like great fun!

  587. you can wear anything when you’re a baby and get away with it. What someone should do is a book called Wacky Knits for 40 year old’s. Now that would be funny!

  588. Crazy! I think I can make that hat into a viking opera singer hat! What every Norwegian-American baby needs!

  589. Well, living in Memphis, I’ve gotta respect a knitting book that includes a pattern for an Elvis wig!

  592. I have loved the Mason Dixon Baby Genius Burp Cloths and have knitted several. Time to expand my horizons. If you knew me like my friends know me then you would see my hand painted Elvis art in my office….and then there is the statue my knitting group decorates for holidays. My friends would say it is time for me to have this book.I had no idea these patterns were possible.

  594. This looks like a spectacular book. Well, spectacularly hilarious, at any rate. :-)

  595. Come on girls. I’ve been committing this sort of child ‘abuse’ since my daughter was worn. Hell, she was an elf, Santa and Rudolph IN ONE DAY, aged 4 days old.
However – she is yet to be be wooly cow. And how can I deprive her of that?

  596. Ah Shore do love me some wacky!

  607. The full-baby pirate costume is definitely a winner, but I think it’d have to be an actual relative to get that much work out of me :)

  608. Dear shiftless ladies,
I used to crochet vegetable pot holders from Annie’s Attic, and my mother would say, “Why don’t you make something useful?” I have made swifties for myself and 2 friends recently, and all have liked them, once I got past the explanation of why I am knitting mop covers. “What is it? What do I do with it? It’s too pretty to mop with.” Lovely idea.
thanks for the permission to be shiftless and goofy. Janet Kelly, Jackson Heights, NY

  609. You can’t begin to know how perfect this book would be among my silly group of friends right now. Hope my number comes up!
