Welcome to Our New World
October 21, 2013
As you can see, we have redesigned the blog. We humbly present: the blog of the future, here today. A blog for the 21st century!
Basically: everything. And nothing. Here are the innovations to note.
Comments. This, more than anything else, is the thing we wanted to fix. This is what started us on a six-month odyssey of migrating ten years of stuff into a new design. Until today, your Comments have been a long, unfiltered batch of very smart ideas that always felt like the beginnings of a million interesting conversations—incomplete, a cocktail party in a too-big room. Now, we have threaded comments, which means when somebody says something, anybody can reply directly to that comment. We hope you will enjoy this. It’s as close as we can come to an actual slumber party without resorting to Skype. We just don’t have the hair for Skype.
Those Buttons. The buttons along the top are the equivalent of Rubbermaid storage boxes–our attempt to make order out of ten years of basically random blogging. We hope you will pour yourself a big mochacappulatte and wander around. There is useful information to be found in there, but also compendiums of every YouTube we have featured on the blog; in other words, the Many Moods of Jack White. As you know, Rubbermaid storage boxes are a tool of optimism. So when you come across a busted link or missing photo, or an entry seems like it’s in the wrong Rubbermaid, well, we’re sorry but we didn’t know what to do with Grommy’s old egg poacher. But we had to KEEP it.
It Shrinks. MDK now works on your smart phone, or tablet, or desktop. And the back end of this thing is so smooth and smart now that we are relieved to report that you will no longer post six comments when you meant to post only one.
MDK Patterns. The MDK Patterns button will take you either to the Ravelry listing for each pattern, or to blog entries we wrote about the pattern.
Free Patterns. AKA Kay’s House Of Dishcloths ’n’ Cowls. Tidied up and easy to find.
Instagrams and Tweets. Mad for this stuff. If we’re not posting here on the blog, we’re over there. (If our snippets of tweets and Instas seem like a party already started, they’re not. Come on in. It’s more random than you think, and nobody is talking about what they ate for breakfast. Unless they got a picture in their cappuccino foam. Everybody needs to see that.)
Subscribe. We have never had this feature, and we’re excited about it. When you sign up, we’ll let you know when there’s a new entry. We plan to sell your email address to every single person who wants it. NOT REALLY. We don’t even know how a person could go about doing such a thing. We want only to stay in touch with you.
Celebratory Prizes. We’re celebrating MDK 2.0 with giveaways. Basically, when you subscribe (if you didn’t sign up via the pop-up window, see below), you’ll be entered for drawings for fun stuff. We’ll be doing this until we run out of fun stuff.
We’re not going to lie: it is a trippy experience to go through the archives and discover that
we ever had children of this size.
In conclusion, THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF THIS. Not to be sappy, but this blog has been a bigger part of our lives than we ever dreamed it would be.
We are grateful for your friendship over these many years. Here’s to more of that!
Kay and Ann
PS These photos are pulled from our earliest entries. So tiny! So blurry!
