“I just want more of her.” A wonderful piece on the late lamented food writer, Laurie Colwin.

Now Joining the North and South

Dear People Who Are Still With Us,
We’re tuckered out. So tired we can’t even go find any goofy stuff on YouTube. (That’s TARRED, my friends. That’s zero-point-zero gumption. Tai Bo? Kung Fu? Did anybody else see Bronx Beat last night?)
This week’s agenda is hinted at in this lovely photo (Thanks, Mary!). See that freight car? That’s Ann’s Suitcase of Love, which is packed with knitterly experiments and heading north tomorrow on a very cheap, very early flight. My Suitcase of Love is in the back of the Kay-ra-van, ready to pick up Ann and everybody else who is flying in. (Including a genuine Nashvillian makeup artiste –can you BULLEEVIT? Get OUT! Mary Elizabeth’s business card says, “I can DO small hair. I just don’t WANT to.”) (Okay, it doesn’t say that, but wouldn’t it be great if it did?) Thence to points East, where the last of the great eccentric handknit photos will be hunted and gathered.
My 18-year-old nephew, one of the fly-inners, is under the impression that he is coming for vacation. (Um, Jonny? Your fabulous vacation includes a bonus: Handknits! Picking up lunch for middle-aged women who will NOT stop TALKING! Holding those light-bouncing frisbee thingies! It’s gonna be great!)
So sick of knitting.
Can’t wait to get back to knitting.
Love, Kay

So you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, right? Hang in there, we are all looking forward to seeing those handknits!

  8. It all sounds so glamorous…NOT! Hang in there – we miss you!

  9. I think I know Mary Elizabeth. You will all be southern simply from exposure to her. Pecan Pie pressed into human form she is.

  10. You need a complaints choir: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w84qzHdEms
Maybe the knitters should write one?? That’d take your minds off your troubles.
Wishing you bouncy light and bouncy hair….

  11. LOVE IT!! Make sure to bring the Aqua Net.

  12. Can’t wait to see the finished product(s)
just started on a no-sew-mitered-square blanket. So much fun
Ann–Did you ever finish the shrug?

  13. Oooh, can I come watch? The big hair sounds fun! ;)

  14. You are just tormenting us aren’t you, all these hints and no photos! Good luck.

  15. I am being very patient. BUT I CAN’T WAIT!!!

  16. Is that not every nephew’s dream vacation?

  17. Well I’m glad I’m not going to be around to hear what Jonny has to say when he’s on his way for his 5th or 6th lunch run. I have my own kid’s whining to listen to.
I know exactly what you mean about “so sick of knitting. Can’t wait to get back to knitting.” as I knit for a living (okay, I knit for yarn money as that’s about what it amounts to) but in my non-work life knit obsessively the minute I mail a package off. Funny how that works but you hit the feeling exactly on the head.
You guys are great. Can’t wait to get your next book.

  18. Oh, is this the photo shoot for the new book?
It’s quite a year for books I can’t wait for: the last Harry Potter, Crazy Aunt Purl’s book, and now M-D II.

  19. Just glad to know you are still alive and haven’t lost your sense of humor.

  20. Ann and Kay – Hang in there! I am like sooo dying to see/ogle/knit from the new book -
Have a great shoot – and please squeeze in a visit to an NJ knitting store with the new book – pretty please????

  21. Dear Kay and Ann-
My heart is with both of you because I just sent my new book to the printer last week and want to share one thing about the photo shoot – which you probably learned last time but it bears reminding: Get lots of photos! Lots of angles! Lots of options! When it comes time to lay out the book, certain things are going to work better than other things and you want to be sure to have lots of those certain things and you can’t know ahead of time what they are, so my advice is: Get lots of photos! Have fun! I can’t wait to see the book and find out what in the world it is all about. All I know is that since you two are co-creating it, it is sure to be a much loved and inspiring and nourishing and warm and wonderful book. I already feel like I am hugging it.
    Love,
    Cat
    P.S. Don’t lose your luggage.

  22. But it will be so worth it, right? isn’t that what we are always supposed to say? like when you are lying on the bathroom floor for 3 (or more!) months of “morning” sickness? or when you are remodeling and cooking all your dinners on a hotplate and washing the dishes in the bathroom sink? or packing for vacation, with CHILDREN?! And you know what? it always IS worth it!! so hang in there!! I know I can’t wait to see the finished product!!

  23. I’ve honored you with an award. Check it out: http://peachesandpurls.blogspot.com/2007/06/ive-been-doubled-tagged.html

  24. Just hold’in ya both in our ever lov’in hearts. The “birthing” of this book has had us all pacing the floor and wringing our hands. We loyals can hardly wait to see the face of that “BABY”, count all it’s pages, and hug it dearly. The WORK….Oh, the Work, but what a sweet delivery it will be! xoxo ML

  25. Of course we’re still with you! And hoping that the weather is great for the photo-shoot.

  26. Ann and Kay,
Whats going on with the hostage? Inquiring minds want to know!!! Good luck with the photo shoot!
    Libby

  27. Hopefully y’all are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel (and hopefully it’s not a train)! Good luck with the shoot!

  28. But the book will be spiffing! I bought MDK last week in Canada, and lets just say I lugged a heckuva lot of dishcloth cotton back home! Can’t wait for the next one!

  29. Maybe I have ESP or ESPN or PBS or PMS but something tells me that even 1000 postless days would be worth it when the book comes out. I can’t wait to see these (inevitably) stunning photos. I am so excited for both of you – and for all of us – and really looking forward to the new book. Any sort of broad estimate as to when it will be in print and available for public consumption?
Kay, is this the same nephew that you knitted a sweater for a while back?

  30. xoxo

  33. Just finished reading the fabulous article about you in the Rowan Spring/Summer 2007 Newsletter. Being somewhat of a newborn Rowan addict myself, I must say I really enjoyed reading a little about you both. Your book is next on my list of purchases to hide from him.

  34. Oh, hey, Kay – thanks for the shout-out! Glad you could appreciate that photo. (Love her photoblog.) Have a wonderful time and safe travels. I don’t suppose coming east will bring you to Virginia, will it? Because if so, there’s a bunch of yarn shops in central Virginia. Five in Richmond alone.
    Just sayin’…. ;-)

  35. Hope this is a mighty fine book you gals are working on. With all this heat, you ought to be at the cabin, drinking some kind of spit- fire martinis and knitting on warsh rags or a little something to take the edge off. Yep, right after you deliver us another knitting book!
Love your first book but I need the antidote for the warsh rag addiction! No, don’t tell me it’s socks!! Ha!

  39. Ha ! It’ll be the making of the boy …. spending some time with REAL women. He may as well face up to his future ;0)
Awaiting the second tome with eagerness. I keep on revisiting the lovely first one – it really is one of my favourite knitting books and not just because I like you guys !
