Have we ever talked about Tom Waits? Big fan here. His excruciating, beautiful music always brings back my first years in New York, when I was scared and enchanted by so many things. For a too-brief period of affordable rent and good company, I had a roommate who wore out her Tom Waits and Richard and Linda Thompson records on me.
As I putter about doing my holiday readiness activities—Most Moisturized Mom is on her way—look busy!—I’m enjoying the heck out of Come On Up to the House: Women Sing Waits, a new album of Waits songs sung by some of my favorite singers, including (sewing circle shoutout!) Rosanne Cash and Allison Moorer. The intimacy of their voices is a knife to the heart. In a good way.
It’s nice to be able to understand the words, for one thing. But each singer brings something new, and now I want to sit here and roll the Tom Waits videos on YouTube.
