A few days ago, the world lost a great writer: Los Angeles’s restaurant critic, Pulitzer Prize-winning Jonathan Gold.
I had barely heard of him before his death, but in recent days I’ve read so many loving tributes to him that I feel that I really missed out.
One Twitter trail led quickly to Laura Gabbert’s 2016 documentary film about him: “City of Gold.” It’s a wonderfully detailed and open-hearted documentary of the man, and highly educational for L.A.-avoiding parochial New Yorkers like me. What a city! Who knew? (I look forward to your letters.)
“City of Gold” is streaming on Amazon Prime and iTunes, and is very likely available from your local library.
Jonathan Gold packed a lot of living into the years he got. Let’s all do that.
