mYak yarns are spun in Italy from one of the most precious fibers we’ve encountered: down shed by baby yaks who live on the Tibetan Plateau, hand combed from their coats. It’s incredible stuff, and incredibly hard to describe. Think cashmere, then imagine a silkier feel and luminous sheen.
Paola Vanzo is the force of nature behind mYak yarns. Born in Italy, she spent many years working with the nomads of the Tibetan Plateau. Eventually, she helped establish a cooperative with local nomadic communities herding yak and Tibetan cashmere goats. mYak yarns are products of a sustainable production chain, respectful of local traditions and people, and of the animals from which the raw material is collected. The yarns are milled in Italy, in the Biellese area, renowned for spinning.
For the past few years, every time we ran into Paola at knitting shows, we’d pet and sigh over her yarns, and wonder: what to make, what to make? The answer came with the publication of Vibrant Connections, a collection of designs by Kirsten Kapur.
As a special addition to the MDK Holiday Shop, we have a limited quantity of mYak kits for Kirsten’s luxurious cowl, A Different Light. This extra-deep cowl pools softly around the neck, with simple slip-stitch colorwork that looks more complicated than it is.
This is heavenly knitting, and a perfect project to sample these luxurious, colorful yarns.
Which Yarn Is Which?
Half of the yarn (the greens) is Tibetan baby yak and half (the pinks) is Tibetan cashmere.
A print copy of Vibrant Connections is included in this kit. (The book includes a Ravelry download code for the ebook edition. No electronic products will be delivered by Mason-Dixon Knitting.)
